The visit to Auvers, and reading Bernadette Murphy’s excellent book, Van Gogh’s Ear, provided colour material and inspiration to begin a short series of abstract paintings based on Van Gogh’s painting, The Yellow House.
Famous painters
Van Gogh
Auvers-sur-Oise is where Vincent died, (the view is from his bedroom, presumably the level crossing is a modern addition) though the village is often eclipsed by Arles where Van Gogh briefly shared his Yellow House with Paul Gaugin. Still, studio visits are always revealing - the one shown is in Giverny.
Claude Monet
Next to visit Monet’s studio and garden at Giverny. This is perhaps a strange way to pay homage to a painter, along with a few thousand other tourists… but the colours were an inspiration, as was the pretty village itself and therefore worth it.
